Grant Receives a Second Chance
Lincoln appoints Ulysses S. Grant General of Volunteers in Illinois. Grant had resigned his army commission in 1854 due to “bad habits” and was working for his brother as a tanner when the war began. However, his West Point credentials are too valuable to be ignored by the U.S. Army.
